round & round

ah, email forwards. this one’s an oldie-but-goodie from back in the day. still shows up every so often in my inbox, so this round i’ll post instead of re’ing, with a bit more tale-telling than you drop in quickie group-emails:

1. What is your occupation? i’m a veterinarian for laboratory animals. a lot of people i work with tend to be less-than-revealing about what they do when meeting new people or chatting with strangers (like on airplanes) due to animal rights psychos. so far, i haven’t been assaulted for my beliefs or my job, though i have had people get angry or upset now and then. in general, i’m pretty open about what i do, and i think i’m pretty good at explaining what actually goes on in a research lab.
2. What color is you
r underwear ? there’s a whole bunch of different colors in this house.

3. What are you listening to right now? the tranquil silence of my house late at night, or the hum of the computer’s fan.
4. What was the last thing you ate? Candy had people over tonight for enchiladas. a new recipe she found somewhere, which turned out really well.
5. Do you wish on stars? i haven’t in years, perhaps i should start up again. lately i keep feeling busy to the point of being overwhelmed, and i think i need to remember to maintain my zen a little more often.

6. If you were a crayon, what color would you be? hmm, if you go with this meaning ”what’s your fave color?’ then the answer would of course be emerald green. if you want to interpret the question instead to say ‘what’s the ugliest color ever, the one nobody uses, so you don’t get your head rubbed off by frequent use’ it’d definately have to be some shade of burnt yellow.

7. How is the weather right now? clear and cool, though it is indeed warmer than you’d expect for baltimore in late january.
8. Last person you spoke to on the phone? Gary, getting directions to his & Candy’s house for the aforementioned dinner get-together this evening.
9 . Do you like the person who sent this to you? of course, though we don’t hang out much, even though Ann lives a whole lot closer to me than any of my college buddies. i should rectify that sometime, since frederick isn’t all that far away.
10. How old are you today? 28, and thusfar, i’m not really freaking out about the impending big 3-0. i didn’t stress over the previous “milestone” birthdays, so i’m thinking this subject just isn’t on the list of things i worry about on a daily basis. the thought of getting actually **old**, tho, that’s scary: deep wrinkles and white hair, my whole physical self unrecognizeable. i suppose by the time that happens i’ll be used to me, living through the subtle changes over time, but the mental image of two very different pictures with the same eyes is frightening.
11. Favorite drink? i am a complete wine whore, as differentiated from a wine snob. while the flavor of wine does change quite a bit from one year to the next in some vineyards, saying crap like good year/bad year just gets intimidating to people, and makes it sound like you have to take some college class just to have a drink. wine’s just tasty, and there’s enough variety that most people can find something that they like. but also, like my mother before me, i am a margarita jedi.
12. Favorite sport to watch? oooh, i’m such a chick on this one. most sports bore the crap out of me. if something’s bizzarre or funny, though, that’s entertainment (not lame-o sports), making it watchable. otherwise, it’s ice dancing for me.
13. Have you ever dyed your hair? oh, hell no. i’m ever so vain about the red tresses that i’ve even thusfar been unable to use wash-out temporary colors for halloween/etc. ask me in 40 years (see q.10) to see what the grey did to this vanity.
14. Favorite perfume or cologne? estee lauder’s pleasures, and either pleasures for men or sandalwood oil for nights out at smoky clubs or bars. i tend to not wear perfume for everyday, tho, since i work with animals and the strong or artificial odors of perfume can be disturbing to them.
15. Pets? the current crew: miss Sheba the mostly-sheltie, Luna and Morrolan the corn snakes, bathroomfish the betta, Atlas the sulcata tortoise, and Jason the axolotl.
16. Favorite month? March, because the return of spring is the best time of year.
17. Favorite food? i’m a total cheese snob, which matches nicely with being a wine whore. but yeah, this one’s definately closer to the snob end of the scale, cuz there’s no f’ing kraft singles in this house. i had to buy velveeta today to make queso dip at Candy’s house tonight, and that purchase about killed me. my current fave snobby cheeses are humboldt fog, saint andre, and champignon mushroom brie.
18. What was the last movie you watched? ‘intolerable cruelty’ was the latest tidbit from netflix, but the last thing i saw in the theater was ‘brokeback mountain’.
19. Favorite day of the year? i’m pretty fond of new year’s eve, halloween, and the first day of spring. but i suppose my favorite day is whenever i have time to both acomplish something and relax and enjoy the satisfaction of acomplishment.
20. What do you do to vent anger? generally, i blather to whatever unfortunate happens to be around to listen. i’m pretty talented at stomping around in a huff for about 30 minutes till i get over it, unless it’s one of those rare MAJOR rage-inducing crisis moments, which tend to make me unload frustrated tears (which then means i’m pissed off that i’m crying for being pissed off, which obviously doesn’t work out so well).
21. Fall or Spring? hmm, spring is the best, but as long as it’s neither blazing hot summer nor short-day grey winter, it’s pretty damn good.
22. Hugs or kisses? ideally, you can find good ones of each from a decent person, but if you’re forced to choose one, i’d have to go with hugs. you can get a great hug from even a co-worker, but if you’re smoochin on someone you’re not “involved” with…
23. Cherry or Blueberry? blueberry, since sometimes even fresh cherries taste like artificial cherry flavor, which is pretty nasty.
24. Do you want your friends to email you back ? email, blog, comment, whatever. drop me a line, say hi, keep in touch now that all my peeps are scattered to the four winds, or give a shout-out from a new internet-bud. which is to say, yes.
25. Who is most likely to respond? couldn’t tell you, it’ll be a surprise to me, too.
26. Who is least likely to respond? blogging the about-me stuff makes this a moot point, so there you go.
27. Living arrangements? in my little townhouse in b’more, with the abovementioned (see q.15) animals, and room for houseguests. my landlord is rather absentee in maintenance issues, but it’s a nice place anyway.
28. When was the last time you cried? prolly 2 weeks ago as part of a brief but crappy respiratory illness. does it count if the crying was an involuntary reaction to heinous coughing? 2 finger’s worth of knob creek burbon on the rocks in one of my super fun retro rocks glasses (thanks mom!) knocked both the cough and me out for the evening.
29. What is on the floor of your closet? hmm, which closet. i’ve discovered over the years that older houses have crap for storage spaces. apparently, people of old didn’t have extra stuff other than what they were wearing at the time, or my closet space is just the product of some joke i don’t get. the floor of one closet has a sterilite full of my other bedspread selections, another closet has shoes, the last one has some action figures and craft projects.
30. Who is the friend you have had the longest? well, the most correct choice would be my mom. at some point, she stopped being “the parent” and we ended up with much more of a friendship thing. other than that, my girl Michelle, who’s off fighting for child protective services in Austin.
31. What did you do last night? worked late to finish all the final edits on our manuscript (coming soon! check out the february issue of the journal of comparative medicine for some esoteric science stuff on Anaplasma phagocytophilum if you’re needing an alternative to sleeping pills), came home and cooked dinner, opened a decent cab (q.11) and watched a movie (q.18), and played around with a delicious account.
32. Favorite smell? baking bread, crushed fresh rosemary or basil, warm clean laundry from the dryer (so i guess bounce dryer sheets), and the herbaceous green scent when you’re cutting stems of flowers to put them into water.
33. What inspires you? personal and financial independence. the fact that i live in a country where i can go off to the grocery store and have everything under the sun all available on demand, year round. to be at least half as good a person as the dog thinks i am.
34. What are you afraid of? cockroaches (the itty bitty german roaches they have up here in baltimore do NOT count. i’m meaning the 3+ inch long **flying** american roaches. they’re evil, and they just don’t die) and being perceived as stupid.
35. Plain, cheese or spicy hamburger? definately cheese (q.17), ideally with some mushrooms too.
36. Favorite car? i’m especial fond of large 2-door sporty things. itty bitty cars are scary little death traps, and anything with 4 doors makes me think i’m turning into a soccer mom (considering my kidless life, that’d be super crappy). i like my monte carlo a lot, and if money or sense were no object, i’d probably like a viper.
37. Favorite dog breed? i love sheepdogs. smart and utterly devoted.
38. Number of keys on your key ring? hmm…2 house keys, 2 car keys, so 4 total.
39. How many years at your current job? 2.5, and my residency is over soon, so i’m on the hunt for my ideal happy place right now.
40. Favorite day of the week? saturday, so i can either acomplish or loaf (q.19) or both.
41. How many states have you lived in? 2, TX and MD.
42. How many cities have you lived in/name them: houston TX (twice), portland TX, college station TX, and b’more MD.

so, that’s the tale for now.  i’m wondering, if i got these same questions 5 years from now, would the answers have changed yet?
